Professor John Mearsheimer just made a private visited to Moscow and St. Petersburg in the early September. In this video he talked about his impressions talking to locals that the Russians felt Putin is not waging the war with sufficient vigor. If Putin were to be replaced, the new person will be at least as hawkish as him, if not more hawkish. Even if Putin were replace a year or two ago, the person who replace him will not more interested in accommodating the West. There is no evidence the widespread belief in the West that Putin’s replacement would have been something of a pussycat was correct. If anything, if anything, Putin’s replacement would have been a hardliner.
As to the politics situation inside Russia, profession Mearsheimer said, “Very clear from talking to Russians, listening to what they have to say about their country, they are very nationalistic. Many Russians have relatives who lived in Ukraine. Here are huge numbers of Russian have Ukraine heritage, and vice versa. Lots of Russians view Ukraines as brothers and sisters. Russia view European using Ukraine to wrecking and dying for the cause of destroying Russia. European are the real devils in this story and it is the British and the Germans among the European countries who the Russians loathe the most.
Professor Mearsheimer got the impression during the conversation with Russian politicians that Biden administration started out knocking Russian off the list of great powers, but Trump’s administration may be more inclined to negotiate peace deal with Russia. Not just stop the war, but work out relationship between Russia on one hand the United States on the other. Professor Mearsheimer said, in the August 2025 meeting in Angruich, Alaska, the Russian had actually agreed to make important compromise on the territory (32:49). That was why Putin came to meet Trump there.
